Circuitry on the battery itself generally reports the battery’s capacity and health to the operating system. Some devices are better at understanding how much power they have. The hardware that monitors how much capacity the battery has left may have an inaccurate estimate, which why a device might die when the operating system is still reporting 10% or even 20% battery power left. In other words, they won’t hold as much power. RELATED: How to Calibrate Your Laptop's Battery for Accurate Battery Life Estimatesīatteries suffer wear and tear as you use them. If the Battery Dies Without Warning, It Doesn’t Know How Much Juice it Has It can’t predict the future, only guess based on current conditions. It’s similar to why progress bars can be so inaccurate. In other words, your device makes an estimate based on the current rate of battery drain. Even if you’re just browsing the web, some websites–especially ones with video ads–use more system resources than others. For example, Windows might be installing updates–that will use more CPU resources, drain battery power more quickly, and lower the estimate. As such, you will notice the remaining battery life often fluctuates as you continuously run your laptop. This estimate can also fluctuate based on the work your computer is doing in the background. However, if you changed your usage on the next 30 minutes by just running MS Word, it then recomputes the estimated time remaining based on the power consumption of the last 2 tasks you’ve made with the laptop. So, if your first 30 minutes of use you play a video then it computes the remaining battery life based on the amount of power consumed vis-a-vis the elapsed time. My observation is that the computation of the battery life is based on historical usage. Update: There have been questions if this app is reliable. Will be running the software on all my laptops now and see how they all compare.Ĭheck out or download the Battery Bar here and let me know how what’s the indicated battery life for you model of laptop in the comments. It also show how much is the capacity of the battery and the current health (battery wear).īatteryBar tells me I’m getting around 3.5 hours for a full charge although from experience I was able to squeeze near 5 hours of use on this unit before. The screenshot above is for my HP Mini 311 which I upgraded to Windows 7.
